Rabbit models of dry eye disease: comparative analysis

AIM: To report ocular changes in rabbits after the implementation of three different induction methods to create dry eye (DE) conditions and provides evidence DE-related disease evolution. METHODS: Experimental were divided into 3 models. The first model used involved triple injection complete Freund’s adjuvant, 50 µL each, also called meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) model. In second model, DE created by resection nictitating membranes (NM), Harderian glands (HG), main lacrimal (LG), LGR third topical administration benzalkonium chloride (BAK) 0.1% solution. Schirmer test, surface staining with fluorescein, tear break-up time tests implemented before excision. After euthanasia, tissues dissected. Cornea, conjunctiva, treated periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) haematoxylin–eosin staining. RESULTS: MGD triggered inflammation glands. It detected lipid layer film. bilateral NM, HG, LG reduced watering BAK solution impacted mucosal CONCLUSION: Different are observed syndrome composition film differ depending on which part is targeted. More studies need be done confirm whether an increased thickness cornea has any impact disease.
